Pentagon invests another $160 million from CHIPS Act to boost semiconductor manufacturing

WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense announced it invested another chunk of cash from the Biden administration’s CHIPS and Science Act into the Microelectronics Commons, the latest significant infusion meant to spur domestic semiconductor development across the country.

Microelectronics projects awarded CHIPS and Science Act funding

MIT and Lincoln Laboratory are participants in four microelectronics proposals selected for funding to the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC) Hub. The funding comes from the Microelectronics Commons, a $2 billion initiative of the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and innovation. The regional awards are among 33 projects announced as part of a $269 million federal investment.

Northeast Microelectronics Coalition Hub Steps Up for Federal Project Call

BOSTON – The Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC) Hub has submitted 15 proposals to the federal government’s Microelectronics Commons Call for Projects launched in late calendar year 2023, pulling together collaborative projects that span the NEMC Hub’s 170 member organizations from across the Northeast. Highlighting the Hub’s strength in diverse sectors, its submissions covered all six of the critical technology execution areas identified by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) including 5G/6G technology, AI Hardware, Commercial Leap Ahead Technologies, Electromagnetic Warfare, Secure Edge/IoT computing, and Quantum Technologies.
