POWER Up Your Microelectronics Workforce

$1.2M in Program Funding for NEMC Hub Members in New England, New York & New Jersey

The Northeast Microelectronics Coalition’s Preparing Our Workforce for microElectronics Resiliency (POWER) Program provides funding and support to NEMC Hub members looking to establish new or boost existing education or training programs to bolster the microelectronics workforce throughout the Northeast region of the U.S. This funding is intended to address workforce barriers to success. Acceptable uses of funds for the $1,200,000 grant opportunity will charge the microelectronics ecosystem with funding for growth and deployment, and applicants are encouraged to propose creative and flexible solutions that reflect the unique needs of their communities and the microelectronics industry. Awarded project duration is expected to be approximately one year.

Investments are intended to address workforce challenges to successful microelectronics research, education, training, manufacturing and industry growth. Successful applications will be from NEMC Hub members who can identify what is holding them back from success in the microelectronics industry and who propose a workforce solution reasonably addressed with public funds. Successful applications will present data showing how their projects will measurably improve their ecosystem experience and output.

Fundable solutions may include:

  • Employer support:
    • Developing and launching an internship or registered apprenticeship program.
    • Purchasing key equipment required to expand training capacity and hire more people.
  • Employee support:
    • Providing wrap-around support services (e.g., transportation, childcare) that enable individuals to participate in and complete training or go to work;
    • Upskilling incumbent workers to enable growth, resiliency and higher wages; and
    • Establishing mentorship programming.
  • Educational or training institution support:
    • Enabling a cross-institution, train-the-trainer model to address instructor shortages;
    • Developing curriculum for proven and validated industry needs; and
    • Purchasing modern equipment so education and training is up-to-date and relevant to industry standards.
  • Ecosystem and pathway support:
    • Forging regional partnerships to coordinate workforce development efforts across multiple states or jurisdictions;
    • Piloting programs to test innovative approaches to workforce development, such as virtual training platforms; and
    • Creating clearer career pathways for new talent into the microelectronics industry.
